Prof. Rajendra Sisodia Conducts Seminar on "Conscious Capitalism" at IIM Kozhikode

As a part of its endeavor to achieve excellence and a leadership position in management education IIM Kozhikode has started the "Thought Leadership Seminar Series", under which it would invite leading thinkers and renowned personalities / academicians to share their thoughts on emerging challenges and opportunities in management.

The first seminar under this series was held in the institute's campus by Prof. Rajendra Sisodia on "Conscious Capitalism".

Prof. Rajendra Sisodia is Professor of Marketing at Bentley College, University of Bentley, Massachusetts, USA. He has a Ph.D. in Marketing from Columbia University. In 2003, he was cited as one of "50 Leading Marketing Thinkers" by the Chartered Institute of Marketing. His book "The Rule of Three" (with Jag Sheth, Simon & Schuster) was a finalist for the 2004 Best Marketing Book Award from the American Marketing Association. Prof. Sisodia has published nearly one hundred articles in publications such as Harvard Business Review, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, Journal of Business Strategy, and Journal of Business Research. He writes frequently for the Wall Street Journal. Consulting clients include AT&T, BJ's Wholesale, Perot Systems, Siemens, Sprint and IBM.

Prof. Sisodia is at the forefront of a movement toward "capitalism with a conscience" and today he found an eager audience in the students and professors of IIMK where he elaborated on this fast emerging line of thought. Citing many instances amongst many leading commercial organizations, Prof. Sisodia pointed out at how an higher sense of 'business purpose' and holistic stakeholder orientation have put these organizations at the forefront of traditional performance indicators and even consistently beating the market over longer durations. In a fast changing market only better alignment of all stakeholder interests, not just the shareholders, will be the sole viable business model.

Appreciating at how Indian business houses, like the Tata's, traditionally have a better focus on stakeholder and society interest, he opined that by emphasizing more on 'conscious capitalism' India can better avoid huge costs and trouble by avoiding the western blueprint to development. Today even the west is taking 'karma capital' seriously.

The session ended with Dr. Debashis Chatterjee, Director, IIMK thanking Prof. Sisodia for delivering this talk at IIMK and further emphasizing the importance of the idea behind today's topic.
