IIM, Calcutta Organizes International Entrepreneurship Summit

The 3rd International Entrepreneurship Summit at IIM, Calcutta started off with the Lighting of ceremonial lamp by Prof. Shekhar Chaudhuri, Hon’ble Director, IIM Calcutta.

The second day of the 3rd International Entrepreneurship Summit started off where the first day left, discussing futuristic businesses, entrepreneurial ecosystem and bottom of the pyramid businesses. The keynote speaker, Mr. D. D. Ganguly, CEO of popular web conferencing website, DimDim.com, spoke at length about his experience of starting up. He spoke about his aspirations from his IIT days, his team, first venture and various failures. Motivated audience surrounded him as soon as the session broke for a tea break. “My visit will be successful if even one of these starts up as a result, even in part, of talking to me”, said an excited Ganguly.

The first panel discussion of the day, on “Opportunities for tomorrow”, chaired by Prof. Anjan Raichaudhuri, talked about how biotechnology, Nano-technology and environmental technologies are expected to lead the way in the future. Sustainability in businesses was opined to be a key factor. Prof. Oopali Operajita, Chairperson, Al Gore sustainable technology venture competition, Dr. Rashmi Barbhaiya (CEO of Advinus and ex-head of research at Ranbaxy), Mr. Sudhakar Ram (CEO of Mastek Technologies) and Dr. Shaibal Roy (Applied research works limited) formed the panel.

The second panel of the day, titled “Developing entrepreneurial ecosystem”, chaired by IIMC professor of economics, Prof. Mritiunjoy Mohanty, was joined by Mr. Girish Luthra, (CMD, Gujarat Eco-Textile Park), Prof. Garimella (IMI, Delhi), Dr. Radhika Meenakshi Shankar (Amity School of Business, Uttar Pradesh), Lt. Col. (retd.) H. S. Bedi (CEO, Tulip Telecom), Mr. Soumya Chaterjee (CEO, Flow Consultants), and Mr. Bimal Patwari (CEO, Pinnacle Infotech Solutions). The panel agreed that though there are multiple challenges with regards to the ecosystem, and an ideal one should promote more business persons, entrepreneurs should nonetheless keep striving as hard as they can. Col. Bedi said that “Going for it, despite all odds” is what entrepreneurs must do. Mr. Luthra added in hindi “kashti badalne ki zarurat nahi, dishaon ko badlo, kinaare badal jaayenge”, thus emphasizing that despite all challenges, entrepreneurs must learn to live with and adapt to them.
