Every year around this time Indian business magazines come out with their special issues that carry exclusive stories on India's Best B-school Rankings for the particular year. Initially, it used to create a wide-spread stir as such rankings held much sway in the minds of not just management aspirants seeking information on which B-schools to join, but also corporate recruiters which were always on the look-out for best minds to join their firms. Such rankings also reflected the brand equity of the particular B-school in the market.

And then the tables turned. The rankings were hyped by business magazines so much so that they didn't just reflect the brand equity of the B-schools, but also affected it, to the extent that management aspirants and corporate recruiters started to base their decisions on these. So the data provided by the B-schools and that printed by business magazines were manipulated by both parties to reflect results that benefited both. The irony is that rankings featured by all these sources were considerably different from the other, hence, causing more confusion than providing a clear-cut scenario. And now the situation has reached the extent that such rankings have lost all their credibility.
