Sydenham Batch of 2010 Shows Preference for Marketing Profiles in Summers

 

sydenham-admin-1Quite contrary to recent trends, Summer Internship Placements for corporate projects at Sydenham Institute of Management Studies Research & Entrepreneurship Education (SIMSREE) were hugely successful. The institute effortlessly placed the batch of 120 students in the back-drop of a not-sofavorable economic situation.

The Summer Placement Process 2008-09 for the Class of 2010 of the Masters in Management Studies (MMS) and the PGDBM Program was both phenomenal and path-breaking, with all students bagging exciting, never-before offered profiles in reputed companies. This year witnessed a major deviation from the previous years in terms of profiles and companies, although the highlight was the sheer diversity of the sectors, ranging from Banking, Consultancy, Technology, FMCG, Automotive, Health Care & Pharmaceuticals, Telecom, Media, Entertainment, Advertising, Energy, and Travel & Tourism. A number of students showed interest in exciting profiles offered by start-ups as well as PSUs, quite unlike the past.

The companies offered coveted profiles across verticals such as Treasury, Equity Research, Market Advisory, Investment Banking, Corporate Consulting, Branding, Market Research, Business Development, and many more. 

Companies participating in the process included Voltas, ICICI Bank, Novartis, Deloitte Consulting, KPMG, HPCL, BPCL, UBS, Deutsche Investor Services Private Ltd. (DISPL), Barclays Bank, Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), Colgate Palmolive, Wockhardt, L&T, HDFC, Suzlon Energy, JWT, Sanofi Aventis, Parle Agro, Amul, RBI, Darashaw Capital, Bank of Baroda (BOB), BOB Capital, etc.

Sydenham also attracted participation for the first time from renowned firms and respectable start-ups, some of them coming exclusively to Sydenham such as HT Media, Viacom 18, Skoda Auto, UTV, IDC India, Essel Group, Estee Lauder, Omnitech Solutions, Collins Stewart Inga, HCC, India Forex, Verge Consulting, Enarr Capital, India Games, KJMC Capital, Perfect Relations, Pagalguy.com, Airtel Tele Media, K.R Choksey Securities, iFAST Financial Services and The Government of Maharastra.

Finance Sector

The global financial turmoil failed to have any telling effect on the summer placements or the interest among candidates in the financial profiles. More than 37 percent of the batch opted for finance profiles. Traditional banking majors such as ICICI Bank, Bank of Baroda, HDFC Bank reaffirmed their faith in SIMSREE and recruited in large numbers.

Deutsche Investor Services Private Limited (DISPL), the Investor Services arm of global banking major Deutsche Bank, offered profiles in Project Finance. RBI offered summer projects to 2 students. Investment Banking was represented by firms like Barclays Bank, Darashaw Capital, Bank of Baroda (BOB) Capital, KJMC Capital. Swiss Banking Giant, UBS, also participated in Summer Placement process. India Forex, a Forex Market Advisory firm, made 4 offers in this niche sector. This year saw prominent participation from PSU banks including Bank of India, Union Bank of India, Punjab National Bank offering projects in Corporate Finance and Project Finances. Other major recruiters were Motilal Oswal Securities, Reliance Mutual Fund, Normans Martin, Birla Sun Life AMC, Reliance General Life Insurance, Kotak Commodity Services, ICICI Prudential AMC., DHFL, HDFC Standard Life, K. R. Choksey Securities, Brics Securities and investment consultancy firm, Way2Wealth Brokers.

Most of the finance companies opened up the complete gamut of profiles such as Corporate Banking, Project Finance, Treasury, Risk Management, etc.

Consulting

Coveted Consulting profiles included Strategic Consulting, Govt and Infrastrucutre Advisory, Auto Finance Consulting and Management consulting. US based Verge Consulting, Fourmative Consulting and Milliicent Consulting were the major recruiters. Global consulting majors Deloitte Consulting (Strategy & Operations) and KPMG (HR) also participated in the process. UK based research firm, Decidyn, gave internship in Data Analytics project.

Manufacturing

The biggest gainer in the Summer Placements this year was unequivocally the manufacturing sector. Manufacturing and core engineering companies formed a major chunk of recruiters on campus. This sector saw representation from Voltas (in Corporate Planning division), Godrej & Boyce Ltd., Skoda Auto, HCC, L&T (Heavy Engineering), Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), Suzlon Energy, Essel Group, Shrijee Group ,Tata Chemicals, VSNL, HPCL and BPCL.

FMCG

One student bagged an offer from FMCG major, Colgate Palmolive, for its sought after Summer Internship program. Amul and Parle Agro recruited in large numbers for various profiles spanning SCM, Budgetary Control, Market Research, Sales and Marketing. Estee Lauder, the global cosmetic giant, offered a project in Corporate Finance.

Media, Entertainment & Advertising

Most of the recruiters in this vertical were first time recruiters offering exciting and cool Summer Jobs in offbeat profiles. This included HT Media, Viacom 18, Pagalguy.com, UTV and Times Group. PR Firm, Perfect Relations, and leading Research firm, IDC India, also recruited for first time. Advertising saw representation from JWT, OMD Media and O2 Advertising.

Pharma & Healthcare

Pharma Sector saw representation from Novartis, Wockhardt, Sanofi Aventis and Abbott India.

IT & ITES

Technology companies included Patni Computers, TCS, Aptech Ltd., OmniTech, Venture Infotech, iWEB Technologies, Trimax IT Infrastructure, F5 IT Consultancy, Quick Heal, SQTL, online gaming portal, India Games, and KPO Eclerx.

State Government of Maharashtra, under Joint Secretary of State for Higher Education , Mr. J. S. Saharia offered 9 Summer internships for period of 2 months with a stipend of Rs. 20,000 for the period of tenure . The projects will be live research projects covered under Department of Higher & Technical Education. These projects were being offered for the first time to management students and given exclusively to Sydenham students.

Most of the students of 2010 batch preferred Marketing, followed by Finance, Operations, HR and Advisory roles. Of the 124 companies that took part in process, 50 companies were able to recruit and they together made 137 offers.

Winter Internships

Winter Internships is one process unique at SIMSREE. Every year, in the month of December, students do a month long project with corporates to get real world exposure, after completion of Semester 1.
