International Conference on Hyderabad, December 23, 2004: The Indian School of Business (ISB) is hosting an International conference on the FUTURE OF STATISTICAL THEORY, PRACTICE AND EDUCATION from December 29, 2004 - January 1, 2005. His Excellency Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, President of India, will inaugurate the conference. Professor C. R. Rao, F.R.S., recipient of Padma Vibhushan and the U.S. Presidential award of National Medal for Science, is leading the Conference. Talking about the Conference and the importance of Statistics in all walks of life, Professor C. R. Rao said, "If there is a problem to be solved, seek statistical advice instead of appointing a committee of experts. Statistics can throw more light than the collective wisdom of the articulate few." "The Indian School of Business is committed to promoting world class research. This conference helps us in that endeavour. Professor C. R. Rao is a highly acclaimed researcher in his field and I am very happy that the ISB can support this conference in a big way. I am also grateful to President Kalam for consenting to inaugurate the Conference; his participation is a confirmation to us that the Conference is of great value." said Professor M. Rammohan Rao, Dean of the ISB. Three prestigious International Statistical Societies - American Statistical Association, Institution of Mathematical Statistics, International Indian Statistical Association - are sponsoring this conference. About 300 participants from India and abroad will congregate at the ISB from December 28, 2004 for the Conference. More than half the delegates will be coming from countries such as the USA, UK, Canada, Australia and others. The Conference seeks to assess past developments in the field of statistics and to discuss future directions in statistical theory, practice and education. The conference will also provide a forum for discussion on reforms in statistical training and education needed to meet the growing and changing needs of statistical practitioners among the industry and the government. Current research trends in probability and statistics will also be focused upon. There will also be three associated workshops on Bioinformatics, Data Mining, and Six Sigma Methodology. The conference also plans to present awards for the two best papers presented by young researchers.
