CEO Connect at DoMS-IIT Madras Features MD & Strategy Head of Yahoo! India

As a part of the CEO Connect, organized by the Department of Management Studies (DoMS) IIT Madras, Mr. George Zacharias - MD, and Mr. Sandeep Srivastav - Strategy Head, Yahoo! India addressed the students and the faculty members on 9th of September.

The event was held in the Lecture Hall in the ground floor of the new premises of DoMS. The event began with a first year'ite at DoMS, introducing the event to the speakers. She highlighted on how the event began, the purpose and who are the organizers in charge of the event. This was followed the HOD introducing the Department and the MBA Program. He focused on how the MBA program has evolved over the past years, from Industrial Management to Humanities and Social Sciences to the present form as an independent department.

He also touched upon the strong research and the entrepreneurship programs run by the department and the student profiles in these three programs. The welcome address worded the introduction of the chief guest, highlighted the milestones in his career and the role played by him in Madura Coats and the present role in Yahoo! India.

This was followed by a lecture by Mr. George Zacharias, Chief Guest of the event. He first provided an overview as to how India has transformed from the closed socialist economy to the open capitalist economy wherein enormous competition and potential for breakthrough growth co-exist. In the context of this enormous growth, there will be certain sectors / industries which will be leaders at different points of time. For example, in early 1900s, it was the automobile sector, cellular phone technology during the start of the millennium, and in next 2-3 years, it was the Internet, which is now going to hit the sweet spot of the growth curve. Since this is possible only when the Industry so far chugging along the low growth area of the curve, achieves a breakthrough innovation. This happens only when many things such as Investments, Demographic Tastes, Infrastructure, etc., fall in place. This is likely to happen faster in India because India being democratic economy (as opposed to centrally directed / controlled economy), the natural market forces will work in tandem to speed up the process of achieving the breakthrough growth.

Quoting Edward D. Bono's book titled "Tactics", he stressed that in order to achieve success both financially and professionally, one should target such high-growth sectors. In order to highlight the above point, he focused on his career wherein he shifted from Madura Coats to Yahoo! India.
