CEO Connect at DoMS-IIT Madras Features MD & Strategy Head of Yahoo! India

Previous

On a personal note on the question as to how one should adapt while changing / shifting industries, he stressed on two points namely Hard Work and Cross-functional Capability. One has to work hard to understand as to how the whole system works, and if the industry is in a growth stage, it is going be of a greater problem due to the new innovations swamping the market place every other day.

When questioned on Yahoo's core competency, he replied saying that there wasn't a competency but a bundle of core competencies such as Messenger, Mail and Yahoo! Groups. To bolster this argument, he quoted the statistic that 95% of Internet users in the world check Yahoo! mail at least once in a month.

When asked about what was important for a growing economy services or manufacturing, he replied saying that it is really a continuum and the shift towards services is brought about by higher productivity and global competency in manufacturing, and it is impossible that manufacturing is going to supplant services or vice versa. He also added that small endeavors in strategy seem to face problems for a short span of time but really makes great sense in the long run. It is always that we try out different strategies so that we don't regret that we didn't try out something in the long run.

In response to the social responsibility of Yahoo!, he said that the aim of Yahoo! was to put people on Internet whoever wished to be there. In India also, this is becoming fast possible with the digital divide bridging fast.

Finally, he conducted an on-the-spot survey assessing the relative popularity of Yahoo! over Google and what were the features that set apart Google from Yahoo!

Concluded.
