Pundit Hari Prasad Chaurasia Enthralls IIM Kozhikode

Legendary exponent of the flute and a recipient of Padma Vibhushan, Pundit Hari Prasad Chaurasia performed on the 7th of January 2008 at IIM Kozhikode. The IIMK sub-chapter of SPIC MACAY organized this concert.

SPIC MACAY (Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music & Culture Amongst Youth) is an organization with a network of over 200 chapters spread across the world which organize over 1000 events every year. It seeks to promote awareness about the rich tapestry of Indian culture through a focus on classical arts.

A virtuoso at the bansuri, the North Indian bamboo flute, Pt. Chaurasia is one of the busiest and most sought-after contemporary musicians in the world today. A classicist by training, Pt. Chaurasia has made a conscious effort to reach out and expand the audience for classical music. Apart from classical music, he has made a mark as a film music director along with Pt. Shivkumar Sharma, forming a group called Shiv-Hari.

He has also collaborated with various world musicians in experimental cross-cultural performances, including the fusion group Shakti. Pt. Chaurasia is also the Artistic Director at the World Music Department, Rotterdam Music Conservatory, Netherlands.

At IIMK, he was joined by his disciple and flutist, Sri Sunil Avachat, and tabla-vadak, Sri Ravindra Yavagal, renowned for his mastery of the tabla and a student of the Pt. Sheshagiri Hanagal, a well-known tabla artist from the Dharwad belt.

The concert saw an unprecedented turn-out, with the auditorium overflowing with music enthusiasts from Kozhikode and outside turning up in large numbers. The concert began with a brief introduction of Pt. Chaurasia, Sri Ravindra Yavagal and Sri Sunil Avachat followed by lighting of the ceremonial lamp. The artists were joined by Prof. K. K. Ramesh, a permanent faculty at IIM Kozhikode, playing the Tambura. Punditji began the concert with a musical prayer wishing for the welfare of all present and played the Raag Hamsadwani enthralling the audience with the melody of his flute. Pundit Hari Prasad Chaurasia ended the concert with lighter music.

At the end of the performance, the artists were given a befitting standing ovation. The concert ended with Prof. Unnikrishnan Nair presenting the artists with momentos and a vote of thanks by Hitesh on behalf of IIM Kozhikode for an evening so memorable.

Concluded.
