Indore All Set to Run for Peace at Indore Marathon 2008
On October 2, 2008

Peace is a word that has been forgotten in recent times. With riots and terrorist activities spread across the country, violence has become the order of the day. In fact, it has turned into such an integral part of our lives that we do not twitch at the mention of relevant
incidents. Godhra, Amarnath, Orissa, Ahmedabad blasts, Jaipur blasts, Bangalore blasts have all tested the Indian spirit of endurance. People are finding it difficult to travel in local trains. Some people feel uncomfortable in crowded places these days. We have lost count of the number of lives that have been lost for no rational reason. Gandhi's dream is slowly turning to be his worst nightmare.

In such testing times, it is very important to show solidarity - with the person next to you, in front of you and behind you - regardless of race, caste, creed, religion or anything that just makes us different and in no way superior to the others. As Indians, it is necessary to show that dynamite and fire are not enough to break the human spirit. As Indians, it is necessary to take solidarity, and run with it.

With this notion, the students of IIM Indore have conceptualised the Indore Marathon 2008. The inaugural peace marathon would consist of two parts. The Celebratory Run would be 3.0 km long. The Peace Run on the other hand would be for the more serious runners and would be 10.0 km long. The proposed route of the marathon covers Regal Square paying homage to the Mahatma and his vision of peace.

Indore is getting a overwhelming response from Indoreans. The college and corporate crowd have been the first ones to register and have shown huge enthusiasm in spreading the word to their friends and family. The last four days have seen good response from the Indore public too, with many families registering on the site, www.indoremarathon.com. The theme of Peace and harmony has found a big resonance among the public.

Being the first event of this scale in Indore, the event is getting registrations in the website and through registration forms. Around five thousand people have already registered for the event. "We expect atleast ten thousand registrations on the spot on the day of the event," said Event Coordinator, Rakesh Kumar. "The event is a great stage for everyone in Indore to come and show they care, show the solidarity and unity that is the essence of Indore. Maximum participation is our only goal. That is why there is no registration fee or rules," he added.
