Sabyasachi Hajara, Chairman & MD of SCI, Shares Secrets of Being PSU CEO at XIM-B

On the 17th September 2008, Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar, was privileged to play host to Mr. Sabyasachi Hajara, the Chairman & Managing Director of the Shipping Corporation of India Ltd., as part of X-Sight, a Series of CEO Talks where Industry meets Academia.

Chairman & Managing Director, Shipping Corporation of India Ltd., Sabyasachi Hajara, Addressing Students at XIM-B

Mr. Hajara spoke to the students about what is actually involved in being a CEO. He related the tale of how he came to work for a PSU like SCI, after passing out from the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta. He also described the various qualities that are a must-have in a CEO, and spoke at length about the changing expectations of the industry from a typical CEO. Citing examples of real-life situations from his own organisation, Mr. Hajara stressed that a CEO is essentially like any other leader, and hence, it is imperative that he/she possesses the attributes one expects a good leader to have in abundance.

Such was the conviction in Mr. Hajara's words that quite a few members of the audience admitted that his talk had made them seriously consider joining the public sector after passing out from XIM-B. Many other thought-provoking questions like, 'What are the merits and demerits of being a national maritime carrier?' were posed to Mr. Hajara. To his credit, he successfully managed to parry the continuous barrage of queries from the audience, and satisfy its collective curiosity with admirable aplomb.

At the end of the talk, Mr. Hajara insisted that whatever the case, it is important for every aspiring CEO to first and foremost be a good human being. Indeed, truer words were never said before.

Concluded.
