IIM Calcutta Student Bags 'Dewang Mehta Management Award'

Mr. Harsh Vardhan Chhaparia of the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C) has bagged the 'Best Student in Management' Award at the 16th Annual Business School Affaire concluded at the Taj Lands End in Mumbai on the 26th of September 2008.
Mr. Chhaparia was awarded the "The Dewang Mehta Award" sponsored by the Onward Foundation along with a cash prize of Rs. 2.0 Lakhs.

The competition was intense with 35 participants, each chosen from prestigious Business Schools across India. The contest was judged by a panel of 26 members consisting of the top management from illustrious business houses like the Essar Group and Johnson & Johnson.

Each contestant had to speak for 5 minutes, following which he was grilled by the jury for a period of 15 minutes. Mr. Chhaparia's speech was centred on the three critical factors required for a successful leader - 'strong values', 'ability to integrate stakeholders' and 'ability to get things done'. The parameters for judging included academic excellence combined with leadership qualities, vision and extracurricular attainments.

Mr. Chhaparia has done his schooling in Kolkata after which he proceeded to do his under-graduation in Computer Science from the prestigious Nanyang Technological Institute (NTU), Singapore on a full scholarship. In his second year at IIM-C, he is also the President of the Student Council.

When asked for his comments, Mr. Chhaparia replied, "I'm truly honoured to have won this award, and it was a tremendous learning opportunity for me as I got to learn a lot from my fellow contestants and the members of the Jury."

Concluded.
