SPJIMR, Mumbai Emerges Victorious in Aditya Birla Group - BT Acumen Annual Debate Competition

The stage was set, that too a lavish one at The Taj Palace, New Delhi. It was a war of wits among the National Winners of the Four Zones at the Aditya Birla Group - BT Acumen Finals on 13th December 08. Rishav Jain and Shipra Bhalla from S. P. Jain Institute of Management & Research, Mumbai emerged victorious in the prestigious Annual Debate Competition organised by Business Today.

Talent, enthusiasm and anxiety were on full display on the day. The Jury consisted of the Chief Economist of the Aditya Birla Group (ABG), the Editor of Business Today (BT), Publishing Director of Business Today, and CEO & Founder of Naukri.com.

It got off to a magnificent start with the first semi-final between IIFT Delhi and IIM Bangalore. The topic was Cut Prices, not Production in a Downturn'. Closely contested, the participants were grilled first by each other, then by the judges, and last but not the least, by Harsha Bhogle, with his unmatched wit. The second semi-final between IIFT, Kolkata and S. P. Jain was debated on 'Voluntary Freeze is a Good Way to Help Your Company Fight Slowdown'.

Both the teams very eloquently put their points forth and stuck to their stand vehemently. IIM Bangalore and S. P. Jain qualified for the National Finals of BT Acumen 2008, and it was all the more special because both the teams had qualified for the BT National Debate Finals for the first time. The final was a scintillating experience as both teams debated passionately, and at the same time, handled the jury questions articulately. Finally, the team from SPJIMR emerged as worthy champions.

Rishav and Shipra are First Year PGDM Students at S. P. Jain Institute of Management & Research, Mumbai, and had initially won the BT Acumen Western Zone Finals back in September 2008.

Concluded.
