IIMA's Annual B-school Summit Confluence 2009 Discusses "Sustain" after "Survive"

Previous

The session was focused about the question of considering if capitalism was in essence sustainable. Mr. Kartikeya Sarabhai felt that Indians as a people were generally less wasteful and their habit of thrift made them one of the least polluters in the world.

This idea was agreed to by Mr. Kota, although he felt that as with most things, about Indians and pollution as well a dichotomy operates, that makes certain households maintain a systemic cleanliness and others spit betel on walls. Prof. Krithi added that Indians tended to have a deep respect for nature. Prof. Sriram then raised the question of capitalism's sustainability and suggested that for most businessmen sustainability was a definition that varied with the horizons they looked at. This point was graciously agreed to by Shri Sarabhai who added that was needed today was that instead of telling people the solution to climate change what was essential was to let them know how their logic with regards to the environment was probably flawed. The discussion then moved on to India and the Copenhagen summit wherein most panelists felt India would in principle agree to restrictions on carbon output but refuse to sign a treaty that regulated it to do so.

Having moved from surviving a difficult period into sustaining a business, Confluence 2009 is all set tomorrow for its concluding sessions on making a business succeed and achieve greatness. These forward looking sessions would definitely add those sparks of motivation that would make Confluence's young audience dream and collectively design a great future.

In addition the results of Confluence 2009's flagship event - Masterplan - were declared. Masterplan is a keenly contested Business Plan competition which saw more than 100 entries this year. Of these 6 entries were shortlisted for the final round of presentation before the esteemed judges Mr. Ranganathan, CGM SBI Gujarat and Mr. Rangachary, MD F&S Asia. The winners as decided by the judges were:

  • Joint first prize - Dialyfe Healthcare (ISB) and Enventures "Bamboo waste to electricity" (IIM Shillong).
  • Second prize - GeoEnergy Ventures (IIFM Bhopal).
  • Concluded.
