Using 'Theory of Constraints' in Improving Urban Infrastructure

Conclusion

The Theory of Constraints (TOC) applies the thinking processes used in the hard sciences, i.e., "cause and effect" - to understand and improve systems of all types, but particularly, organizations. The process a clinician applies to treating a patient is an excellent analogy for explaining how TOC goes about solving a systems problem.

There is very much growing importance of urban green space to the future of towns and cities, especially in the urban areas because of the role that urban green space plays in the day-to-day life of urban dwellers, by virtue both of its existence that is people simply knowing that it is there and seeing the contribution that it makes to the urban landscape as well as its use for recreation and enjoyment. Urban green spaces can act as catalysts for wider community initiatives in ways that no other public facility seems able to achieve in similar circumstances. Again and again, people involved in these initiatives may say that if it wasn't for the park (or other green space) nothing would have happened. This social, community and economic role go well beyond the normal, somewhat blinkered view of the contribution of urban green space to the future of our cities. It needs to be given much greater prominence in promoting a higher profile for urban green spaces and in supporting the case for funding at both local and national levels.

In light of this kind of a growing importance, there is a need to carefully plan an architecture for improving the infrastructure (mainly urban) in order to take a country in the right path, and this can be done pretty well by the effective use of the theory of constraints. Our work has just given the example of how urban parks can be improved but this can be extended to other sectors of the urban infrastructure and also there is an ample scope of research in the example that has been discussed.
