Medical Care

E-commerce has tremendous potential in terms of rural medical care. The basic infrastructure required is web-camera and computer telephony. Remote diagnosis of ailments can save lives through quick treatment especially for common diseases. Payment can be made to "e-health kiosks" through cash. The model would help save the time and effort in traveling to cities and also reduce the amount of money involved.

Using the model, farmers can also get their cattle cured of ailments. The farmer can sends pics of the cattle as he listens to the veterinary doctor on line. The model has been successfully implemented in few parts of the country. However, there needs to be awareness and formal channel for such initiatives. The idea can be extended to improving the crop health and agro consultancy.

In health services, users - mainly physicians and medical workers - connect to the network through local telephone nodes to access services such as physician collaborations, medical databases, consultation and referral scheduling, epidemic alerts, medical libraries, e-mail and shared research reporting databases. HealthNet, provided by a non-profit organization, SatelLife is one such example.
