A Dummies Guide for Using B-schools Ranking to take Admission

Page - 1

Rule 1: All B-school rankings are of advisory nature only. Don't try to see too much into the rankings beyond what is necessary.

Rule 2: Compared to what business magazines would like us to believe, B-schools don't trade like shares and, hence, it takes ages to build reputation and also to slide in,
so if some school is climbing five points up or five points down every year, it is not about ranking, it is about methodology or relationships. Treat these surprises as surprises only, as these are statistical errors.

Rule 3: When it comes to ranking, it is more about ranking of a cluster than that of particular B-school, so you can join anything between JBIMS / SP Jain / FMS or XLRI without any severe impact.

Rule 4: Go for colleges but also go for your career choices. If you think you want to make a career in Operations, NITIE is the place to be, so try to identify your core strength and also see what is on offer.

Rule 5: When it comes to 15-100 bracket B-schools, just avoid rankings. Try to gather as much data on your target school as possible. Check its website, see quality of faculty and infrastructure, but don't give too much weightage to infrastructure, as today B-schools are big business, and the first thing you see is their buildings, but not much happens in terms of peer group quality, faculty level and placements. Peer group quality is very important.

Rule 6: This is a difficult task, but we strongly recommend that you must visit your target B-school (especially if it is in 15-100 bracket) to get a feel of it. Though the process may look very cumbersome but remember that you are going to spend the next two years of your life in that place, which will impact your whole life and career in a significant manner. So do try to visit at least the top two schools on your target list.

Concluded.
