Interview with Director, IIFM-Bhopal

Previous

The Institute aims at creating and training 'Green Managers', amalgamating sensitivity towards grass-root level needs with corporate expertise in management, to aid the Forestry and allied sectors. It effectively aims at bridging the Conservation-Corporate-Community divide. From the specialized educational institute like IIFM, the students become more efficient green managers as they not only learn the best way to address the required management inputs, but also address the relationship between business management with environment concerns at the lowest cost. This has resulted in comparative advantage of the students of IIFM over other management graduates. The current phase is recognized as the era of specialization. This is true not only for the field of management but all other areas meant to serve people and society such as medicine, engineering, agriculture, etc. In this highly competitive environment, nationally as well as internationally, specialization has inherent benefit of comparative advantages. Experience suggests that society benefits from specialization.

Entrance to IIFM's Main Building

IIFM, by its charter, has a focus on Forest Management, which by large has been an area under government management. Hence, what kind of opportunities are available to students of IIFM in private sector?

In the last year, the highest international salary was Rs. 20 lakhs and highest domestic salary was Rs. 8 lakhs, both came from corporate sector. For example, Olam International took four students and gave them the Rs. 20 lakhs salary. Some of our students are going for Micro-finance, providing it for the livelihood of rural people and percolating the benefits of liberalization to rural areas. So some of our students are joining banking sectors like ABN AMRO or ICICI Bank, etc., and other corporate sectors. These organizations provide us the feedback that IIFM graduates have a good understanding of rural areas and its people and micro-finance.

Miniscule of the students are interested in joining government jobs. Because those interested in joining government jobs appear for IFS examination, and very few students have taken IFS examination after completing the IIFM program.
