Placement 2006

Key Highlights of Overall Placements

Growing preference for Indian locations and entrepreneurship pursuits marks Placements 2006 at Indian B-schools. This year, several students across various B-school campuses rejected higher paying foreign offers in favor of domestic offers or business ventures of their own. The dreams of entrepreneurs have not been to join their family businesses, but to start their own ventures ranging from setting up football clubs to tourism and skill-based training initiatives.

The abundance of employers led to another trend that has been slowly building over the past year or two, but which has been widely acknowledged only this year - Indian students are giving up overseas placements and dollar salaries to stay home. At campuses that host international recruiters, a number of students refused overseas positions and dollar salaries, and decided to take up domestics job offers. The decision to stay on home-ground is not due to some sentimental reason, but hinges on whether a sector is "in demand" in India or abroad. Many companies are offering initial postings in India and then move to overseas locations. At the same times, many domestic offers entail a foreign stint initially in the first year itself. Students seem to be quite content taking an Indian posting with frequent stints abroad. This clearly shows that home is where the heart is, though candidates would definitely like to visit other countries and gain international exposure.

The focus this year has also been on job-profile and career-path, instead of just high salary figure. Most of the students have been looking for jobs that fit their individual interests and ambitions.
