Contents: The food industry in India is heavily regulated. Food products and packages have to be in conformity with a plethora of regulations which are frequently changed, necessitating adjustments in practices. This programme develops managerial capacity and skills in understanding and using the regulations.

The regulations derive from the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act (PFA), Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, Standards of Weights and Measures Act (WMA), and Essential Commodities Act. The Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS), ISO and HACCP certification, and the World Trade Organization (WTO) may impose additional requirements. The regulations stipulate the production process, use of ingredients, quality of food product, and packaging of the commodity. These regulate manufacturing, distribution, marketing and retailing by imposing onerous responsibilities and liabilities on the parties. In consumer perception, even a suggestion of violation of the food laws by a firm does severe damage to brand image and reputation. Considerable competitive edge can be secured by understanding and using the regulations.
