Seminar on Infrastructure Management Held at DoMS, IIT Madras

Previous

This was followed by how Chennai managed its water crisis in the past. Mrs. Sheela Priya also put forward the fact that though they could not cover the entire city with pipe water supply; they, however, made sure that lorry water supply was made available at every place. Various projects and combination of schemes for meeting the huge gap between demand and supply have been taken up by the TN government. A few of them are as follows: -

  • Harvesting rainwater by digging wells, running hand pumps and bore wells, construction of water pits

  • Chennai-sea water Desalination Project

  • Subsidiary programs like re-use of waste water and treatment of sewage water

Answering the audience, she also mentioned how the privatization of the water at Tirupur, though working pretty well as a model, wasn't very easily replicable.

This was followed by a talk by Mr. Sanjiv Paul. JUSCO (Jamshedpur Utilities & Services Company) is a separate company hived off from TATA steel to take care of the municipal needs of the township of Jamshedpur. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Sanjiv Paul gave an overview of the areas JUSCO dealt with, ranging from waste and waste-water management, power, town planning, public health, civil and electrical works, schools, horticulture and guest-house facilities.

Mr. Paul told how the JUSCO initiative catered to a population base of 7 lakhs, out of which only 1 lakh were directly related to TATA STEEL. He also gave a brief overview about what sectors of operation of JUSCO were limited to the township, and which they planned to implement outside the realms of the township. He laid emphasis on the point of fulfilling the vision of the flagship group to satisfy employees and their communities, to earn profits and to improve the key performance indicators (KPI) like losses, growth in sales, etc.

Coming to the key factors of success, Mr. Paul emphasized on factors like professional approach, bench-marking, quality focus and continuous improvement. He said that the management of infrastructure is much more important than the creation of more infrastructures.
