Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi, Conducted its Annual Seminar
Theme: Building India Inc - Sustainable Development
Post-event Press-release

The Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi continued its annual endeavor to deliberate upon issues that are relevant to the growing global recognition of India Inc. This time it chose as its theme one of the buzzwords that is doing the rounds of industry and academia alike-‘Sustainable Development’, one that impacts our lives directly in more ways than one.

Sustainable Development, development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of further generations to meet their own needs. This forms the basis of strategic dimension of "corporate social responsibility" in almost all organizations.

The Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi decided to tread this path of analysis hand in hand with the industry and the policy makers of the nation at its annual seminar series "Building India Inc - Sustainable Development" on the 4th & 5th November , 2006. Not only was this seminar an analysis but it also served as a workshop to prepare and train budding managers to bring about positive changes in the economic growth of the country.

Day 1

The seminar started with an introduction of the topic by Prof. Surendra S. Yadav. Ms. Seema Arora, CEO, CII ITC-COE talked about the synergy between economic growth and sustainable development. She said, it has to be a 3-prong strategy that involves economic progress, social capital and ecological capital. Prof. Harish Chaudhary highlighted the importance of personal development. " For everything you gain, there is something you loose" he said.

This was followed by three separate sessions each focusing on a different management discipline:

  • Session 1: Marketing

  • Session 2: Finance

  • Session 3: Human Resources

The first session began with Prof. Seema Sharma introducing the topic with focus on India Vis a Vis China.

Ms. Padmaja Krishnan, Director-Marketing, Planning and Research, CSC, was the next to address the audience and she gave the topic an It perspective while talking about Services marketing. She stressed upon the need for premarket activities such as identifying the stakeholders, geographies, competition, and the importance of people centric strategies. The next speaker to enlighten the floor was Mr. Colin J.Warren, Portfolio Manager, South Asia, Global Manufacturing & Services Department, International Finance Corporation who drew references from his experience while working with The World Bank. The session was then enriched by the inputs of Mr. Gullu Sen, Vice President, Dentsu, who added a fresh perspective by highlighting an increasing tendency to ignore values and ethics in the hurry to grow. The last speaker in this session was Mr. Arun Shanker, Ex-Director, Eicher Consultancy Services, who had a rather interactive presentation prescribing the need to align needs of consumers with the requirements of sustainable development.
