Hands shot up in the audience the moment the house was thrown open for questions, and Puri was bombarded with questions on several areas, including the ability of the education sector to handle the growing numbers of Indians who can afford good education and the speaker's unconventional views on SEZs.
Clarifying his stand on the utility of SEZs, he explained that we need to see that conditions are very different in our country, as far as the existence of a capitalist framework is concerned, as compared to China, where these SEZs worked many years back. He emphasized the importance of regulatory changes, which would enable the setting up of Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) in India on a large scale. ICICI Bank has been a pioneer in the field of microfinance in India and Mr. Sengupta has actively spearheaded the group's business in eastern India.

Cicero's Senate - Panel Discussion

Ramsubramaniam, CEO and Vice Chairman of Feedback Ventures. The debate was moderated by Prof. Anup Sinha of IIM Calcutta. This line-up of industry leaders ensured a very invigorating discussion in which a potpourri of views was put forth.
