IIM Calcutta Hosting Annual International Business Festival 'Intaglio'
Highlights of Intaglio Day 2

Previous

Mr. Hajara opened by asserting that India's phenomenal growth rate is certainly something to be proud of; however, he questioned the sustainability of this growth. He further insisted that one should look at not only the numerical values but also consider the impact the growth is having on various sections of our society and whether our country can support such breakneck growth. "India's infrastructure is very inadequate and this is a matter of great concern," he said. He said that corporates and governments alike should work together to improve the state of infrastructure. Further, he said that the vast majority of Indians fall in the rural bracket and it is important that they are also part of the India growth story.

Next, Mr. Rao presented his case. He emphasized the two important aspects of India's growth are her people and here gargantuan domestic economy. He insisted that there is something genetic about the industrious nature and superior intellect of the Indian people. "To market India to the world and make it a true world power, we must first focus on our people and the immense potential in our domestic economy," he said.

Then, Mr. Ramsubramanium made his case by questioning the accuracy of the theme of the debate, "Colouring the White Elephant - Presenting Brand India to the World". He said, "It is not the brand that we need to focus on. Rather, it is the product, the people and the performance that we need to work on." So he believed that India needs to improve at a more fundamental level. He corroborated the point made by the other two speakers that India's main strength is her people and her domestic economy.

The speeches were followed by an intense Q&A Session where students got several fundamental issues clarified. One IIMC student asked, "Your points were all good, but what does it mean for me as an MBA student? How do I play my role in India's progress and what advice do you have for me on my placement which is coming up in 3 months?" The panel unanimously advised that one should pursue the career that one has his heart in, i.e., one that he/she would enjoy. One should excel in whatever one does and that would go a long way in taking India forward.

The unifying theme of the entire discussion was that all panelists and the audience had full faith in India's huge potential.

Concluded.
