Class of 2008 at ISB Organizes ISB Leadership Summit 2007

The panel agreed that though talent management has direct correlation with corporate performance companies still did not do much to address the issue. There was a need for a new thought paradigm of extracting extraordinary performance from seemingly ordinary
talent. Because of lack of time to invest in training, companies have resorted to paying high compensation to bring talent who are high performers from day one which is not the right thing. An interesting observation was that the two more important roles in an organization are Marketing and HR. All the other roles are aligned around these two.

The service industry needs people and good skill. Other resources needed to run a company, such as capital, strategy, technology and innovation are relatively easily available. The cost of attrition needs to be measured properly as the cost of loss of talent is much higher in a knowledge based industry. It is also essential to mix and match talent across the organization, cross-functionally. It is essential to mix and match talent across the organization, cross-functionally.

The panel reiterated that passionate leadership and faith in one’s self was the secret to managerial success.

Track V: India’s Economic Growth: A Tale of Two Economies

The discussion brought together a diverse panel comprising Left leader Sitaram Yechury, CPI (M); eminent economist Subashish Gangopadhyay, Director, India Development Foundation; Venkatesh Roddam, CEO, Nipuna Services Ltd.; and Shamika Ravi, Visiting Assistant Professor, ISB.

The panel was in agreement that there are two economies in India, and that the gap was growing. Moral reasons apart, there is a need to bridge the divide for simply sustaining current levels of growth. State intervention is imperative for empowering the other India. Yechury stressed that massive public investment in economic and social infrastructure, enlarging the tax net, and cooperation from the corporate world is necessary for solving this onerous issue.

Subhashish stated that the divide in India is an age old reality and cannot be solved by mere lip service. The problem can be solved through experimentation and by thinking differently. According to him, proposed solutions are merely old solutions packaged differently and that we need a problem oriented mindset for dealing with this issue.
