Future Managers from SPJIMR-Mumbai Lend Different Strokes to the Social Sector

Previous

Shivpriye looked into the health aspects of the social sector after conducting a maternal health case study that involved 6 villages with population of over 11,000 in Jamsaut Panchayat, Patana. He conducted a survey to gather experiences of rural
women, who have undergone institutional deliveries during the period of 90 days preceding the date of interview. The findings aided the preparation of a proposal to the Central Government for maternal health and welfare policy improvement. The survey is being simultaneously conducted in nine states of India. The study was in collaboration with Shaktivardhini, an NGO based in Danapur, Patna. He also evaluated and prepared a presentation on the programmes conducted from October 2005 to March 2008 under Adithi Kopal Pariyojana that aims for female foeticide abolition and encouragement of birth registrations. Shivpriye opined that ambitious schemes like National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), launched nationwide in 2005, will fail to meet their objectives, if the existing infrastructure at government-run hospitals and health centres is not improved substantially. Cases of shortage of medicines, medicines getting routed to the black market, and hospital staff asking for hefty sums from patients and their attendants for petty services are still hindrances in the administration of government-run facilities that make them far from being effective.

Through such projects and other related activities the centre strives to build the managerial potential of the participants, and at the same time, sensitizes them to Indian ethos and culture. It vouches to create managers who would bring about a sustained and enhanced impact in the face of development and who would honour the subtle difference between duty and responsibility in the corporate world.

Concluded.
