There has been growth not only in terms of population, but also in terms of vehicular traffic. The Motor Transport Department, Government of India estimates that the vehicular population of Bangalore is 9.72 lakhs, out of which two-wheelers constitute 7.08 lakhs, three-wheelers around 61,000, buses 14,000, trucks 27,000, jeeps 6,000 and cars nearly 1.4 lakhs. Unfortunately, infrastructure has not kept pace with this development. Two wheelers constitute seventy percent of the total vehicular population in the city. Poor public transport accounts for this percentage. Almost nearly, 900 vehicles are getting registered every day.

The current status of transport is as follows: -

Transport Number
   Registered Motor Vehicles 5,95,000
   Private Buses 675
   Omnibuses 18,115
   Autorickshaws 82,699
   Cars 2,81,093
   Motor Cabs 9,957
   Maxicabs 8,204
   Two Wheelers 16,28,065
   BMTC Buses 2,100
   KSRTC Buses 10,693
   Fire Engines 128
   Ambulance Vans 534
   Delivery Vans 16,248
   Contract Carriages 289
   Goods Vehicles 67,566
   Construction Purposes Vehicles 745
