Heavy Traffic congestion is a common sight of all junctions. Road margins have become parking lots, while pavements have been encroached upon. The traffic mix consists of motorized and non-motorized vehicles and they fight for the same road space. These vehicles with different space occupancy, ridership characteristics, acceleration and cruising speeds, coupled with insufficient road space, drastically reduces the average speed on the roads. Reduce in speed increases the commuting time and more fuel consumption. The growth in traffic volumes and human population obviously poses a challenge to the city road network, which is primarily radial in nature and converging at the centre.
