4. The most frequently mentioned characteristics of the ideal urban green space could be vegetation, water, play opportunities, comforts (seats, toilets and shelters), good access, sport and events.

5. There may be no clear link between levels of spending and the extent of good or innovative practice.

6. There may be large differences in the amount of external funding that had been gained by local authorities. Lack of resources for capital spending can be a major problem by all local authorities.

7. Urban green spaces can act as a catalyst for wider community initiatives. The fact that parks (and other green spaces) are open every day with free entry and offer neutral ground with non-discriminatory access makes them completely different from many building based activities.

The process can be divided into two strands, each of which can be run in parallel.

Strand 1 can be designed to: -

  • Provide reliable identification of different categories of users of urban green spaces and how they use the range of types of such spaces, especially children and young people, the elderly, the disabled and people from an ethnic minority background.

  • Determine the frequency and extent of use of urban green spaces and how this varies by different types of users and geographic location.

  • Provide a comprehensive picture of the range and nature of activity in urban green spaces, and the facilities offered.
