These are the things that allow the 5 Steps of TOC to be not just a process for managing processes, but a methodology for enabling organizations to maximize their global performance at any given point in time while providing a stable, reliable high-performing platform from which the organization can easily move in whatever
direction its leadership decides. How does leadership decide what direction to take the organization? The TOC Thinking Processes provide the means to develop strategies of all kinds that are only limited by how big its users dare to think. Imagine!

Using Theory of Constraints to Improve Urban Infrastructure

For examining this subject, let us take an example of how to improve urban parks, play areas and green spaces. Based on the above discussed matter, the process of improving urban infrastructure using theory of constraints may be as follows: -

1. The main barriers deterring people from using urban green spaces may be:

  • Lack of or poor condition of facilities (including play facilities for children)

  • Other users (including anti-social behavior)

  • Concerns about dogs and dog mess

  • Safety and other psychological issues (e.g., feelings of vulnerability and inertia)

  • Environmental quality issues such as litter, graffiti and vandalism

    2. In addition, access issues may be of concern to the elderly and particularly to people with disabilities. They relate to concerns about the proximity of and ease of access to urban green spaces, access to get into those spaces and ease of moving around safely within them.

    3. Most of the barriers may be resource issues which relate to the location, accessibility or environmental quality of urban green spaces and could, therefore, be overcome if planners, designers and managers of these spaces could address them satisfactorily.
