Education

Remote education is possible via VSAT terminal through Edusat satellite of ISRO. Recently, such education has been introduced in villages of Kerala by the President of India. IT courses offered through Internet has immense potential especially in small towns. Companies like Aptech and NIIT are trying to provide remote courses through Internet.

Rural Employment

ICT can contribute to better employment opportunities in rural regions through improved labor market facilitation and direct employment. Using electronic job marketplaces, employers and employees can match labor skills and availability to satisfy their demands. For example, TARAhaat, a portal designed to serve villages in rural India, provides job opportunity information on local web-sites in local languages. In addition, the establishment of local tele-centers in countries such as Bangladesh, India and Senegal, has created direct employment for thousands of local women and men. Another successful initiative is that of Skumars.com.

  • It adopts the franchisee concept where the local entrepreneur is the intermediary between the technology and the common man - hence provides gainful employment and educational training to many Indians (53,000 applications are received from prospective franchises from as many as 3287 towns and cities).

  • Franchisee outlets serve as supermarkets, educational institutes, libraries, stock brokerage, travel agencies - one stop shop for information.

    Communication

E-commerce would make feasible the concepts of e-fax and e-postage mails besides telephony. Electronic fax is a digitized version of traditional fax system. A message can be faxed instantaneously through computers connected to Internet.
