IIFM has done lot of research work. Are these research works limited to national level only or gone to international level, and how do you fund them?

Research is one of the important activities at IIFM through which IIFM constantly strives to develop frontiers of knowledge in various areas of forest and natural resource management. Research activities at the institute are focused on finding such applications of management concepts, tools and techniques that can assist green managers in achieving effectiveness and efficiency in forestry operations. Most of the research projects undertaken by the faculty at IIFM are, therefore, of an applied nature. The research projects are mainly at national level, but quite a few which are collaborative are also international in nature.

The funds for research projects come from a wide range of sources. Many national and international organizations fund research projects at IIFM. Our research study on Environmental Accounting, Sustainable Development and Community Forestry has got incorporated in different national policy formulations.

On Admission Process

What kind of background and profile do you prefer in students?

We use the CAT Score for the basic short listing after which we call them to Group Discussion and Personal Interview. Then at the time of the Group Discussion and Personal Interview, we try to assess if the student is really interested in natural resource management. About 70-80% of the time we find that our assessment has been correct. Although there are students who try to be clever but most of them are truly concerned about the environment and are convinced that the inputs provided by IIFM will make them employable in the development sector.

Eventually, the job satisfaction levels of IIFM graduates are incomparable to those of general management graduates, because IIFM graduates are doing something directly for the people of this country, whether it is for natural resources or micro-finance or rural livelihood.
