TATA Group & National Entrepreneurship Network Launch TATA-NEN Hottest Start-up Awards
Voting for TATA-NEN Start-up Awards Opens: August 27, 2008
Last Date for Sending Start-up Nominations: October 22, 2008
Phase I: Short-listing of 30 Hottest Start-ups: November 6, 2008
Phase II: Declarations of Top-5 Winner Start-ups: December 23, 2008

Tata Group, India’s most respected business conglomerate and National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN), the largest representatives of new and future entrepreneurs in India, have collaborated in a unique effort to announce the launch of the
'TATA-NEN Hottest Start-Up Awards'. This is first-of-its-kind people’s choice awards that invite the Indian public to nominate and vote for the best young start-ups in the country. The Awards aim to attract visibility for over 800 entrepreneurs and their ventures in India, and engage over 5,00,000 people.

This is an online contest where people can nominate companies and vote for them both on Internet and through SMS. The structure of the competition ensures both engagement and credibility. After the first round, a short-list of 30 companies will be selected based on the most number of public votes, combined with the highest expert ratings. Finally top 5 winners will be chosen from these 30 companies. The expert judges will be a pool of over 200 people including investors, entrepreneurs, academicians, professionals and representatives across industries.

The Awards have the outcome of directly helping the 30 short-listed companies, and providing even greater support and visibility to the Top-5 Winners. Winners of TATA NEN Hottest Start-ups will receive a potent combination of publicity and business support, designed to spur their growth to the next level.

Prizes in the TATA NEN Start-up Awards

  • Business training, mentoring and incubation support of upto Rs. 50 Lakhs by IIM-A and CIIE.

  • Incubation opportunity to a befitting venture by IIM-B and N. S. Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL).

  • Admission to Microsoft’s Start-Up Accelerator Program for at least one winner.

  • All short-listed start-ups will receive direct admission to pitch to Angels courtesy Indian Angel Network and Mumbai Angels and admission to TiE’s nurturing program.

In addition, all nominated companies stand a chance to be invited for the TATA-NEN Hottest Start-up Funding Challenge 2008. The funding will be provided by Seedfund and the winner could receive Rs. 2-3 Crores of investment capital subject to evaluation, from them. The final decision on the funding for the winning company will rest with Seedfund.

The 2008 Tata-NEN Start-up Awards will showcase a wide range of high potential start-ups from multiple sectors, ranging from healthcare, retail, mobile technologies, bio-tech, hospitality, life-style, IT and service providers.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Romit Chaterji, Senior Vice-President, Corporate Affairs, Tata Services Limited, said, "The Tata Group has been at the fore-front of encouraging youth and providing them opportunities to innovate and develop leadership. It is both passion and goal of the Tata Group to kindle the entrepreneurship spirit in India. The group is delighted to partner with NEN in this exciting nationwide contest that aims to provide visibility, growth and resources to high potential start-ups. In future, some of these start-ups will create 'Value' not only for themselves but for the society at large. This is also an extension to our year-long initiative in West Bengal called Tata Udyogporbo where we are promoting entrepreneurship among WB youth."
