Delphique '09 at MDI, Gurgaon Talks About Resurgence of Industries in the Backdrop of Global Meltdown

Delphique'09, the student research initiative of MDI spanning over a period of three months, culminated into a series of invigorating discussions with eminent personalities from the corporate and public domains.

Starting September 2009, the students researched seven critically important issues that are occupying the minds of the Corporates today. With the help of leading corporates as knowledge partners, and faculty mentors, the MDI community delved on aspects of economic resurgence for a span of two days. The event has been a prestigious hallmark in the calendar of MDI for the past 13 years. Panels on Climate Change, Entrepreneurship and Analytics were introduced for the first time this year, and a panel on Communications was reintroduced, keeping in mind the critical importance of these topics.

Inauguration

The two-day National Management Convention on the theme of "Resurgence of Industries in the backdrop of Global meltdown", was formally inaugurated by Mr. Arun Goyal, the Director of Financial Intelligence Unit, India (FIU-IND) at MDI Gurgaon. Dr. B. S. Sahay, Director, MDI and Dr. Neelu Bhullar, Chairperson, Student Affairs, MDI gave away the welcome address. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Goyal explained in detail the way in which India has coped with the economic turmoil and compared it with the measures taken by countries like USA.

Climate Change: Challenges and Opportunities

The Climate Change Panel with D-Sector as its knowledge partner, looked into the history, current happenings and the socio-political implications of climate change in thorough detail. The panellists included dignitaries like Mr. M. Gopal Krishna, Researcher and Coordinator, WaterWatch Alliance, Dr. Sudhirendar Sharma, famous Environmentalist and Editor of Rural Energy Journal and Dr. M. C. Sharma, Professor at JNU. Mr. Kuldeep Ratnoo, Executive Director of D-Sector, facilitated the panel discussion.

The impact of Climate Change was discussed through the viewpoint of scientific research, geopolitics and philosophy by the panellists. Dr. M. C. Sharma, shared his research findings and quashed the myth about the phenomenon of glacier melting. He explained to the students that the rise in temperature leads to an increase in precipitation which has in fact led to a slowdown in the rate of retreat of Himalayan glaciers. Mr. Gopal Krishna stressed on the need for a change in political policies regarding pollution control as these are being influenced by the western superpowers. Dr. Sudhirendar Sharma explained that initiatives to reduce carbon emissions like carbon trading are only focussed on money and not on climate as the actual carbon emitters have still not reduced emissions and have just bought some carbon credits.
