CoolAvenue's Interview with:
Inderpreet S. Makkar
PGDM
Batch 2009-11
International Management Institute, New Delhi

  1. General Questions
  2. Questions related to Pre-MBA Preparation
  3. Questions related to Group Discussion / Group Exercise
  4. Interview-related Questions
  5. After Joining MBA

Q. Date and location of Interview. Were you given the option to choose? Was the interview date fixed or rescheduled couple of times.
A. 18th Feb at IIM, Bangalore. No option was given and neither was it rescheduled.

Q. Can you tell us about the panel that interviewed you?
A. It consisted of senior faculty members from Marketing, HR and Finance backgrounds, a psychologist, Industry experts. Overall, there were 9 members on the other side of the table.

Q. How long was your interview?
A. 15-20 minutes

Q. What was the first question? The most interesting question? The most difficult question?
A. First Q - How are you doing today? Most Interesting - You are already earning so well. Why do you want to do an MBA? And how are you going to manage your funds? Most Difficult - Why do you think we have our reservations to accept you as our student?

Q. How did you prepare for the interview? While facing the panel, were you confident, did you feel prepared?
A. I did not prepare for the interview. But, I had a sales experience that gave me confidence to handle the interview. But, I was put under the most stressful interview I have ever been through. They made me feel as if I don't know anything in 20 minutes. I had a crystal clear clarity in what I want to do in life and how am I managing my career so far and where do I plan to go from here. That really helped as they want people who know what they are and where do they want to be.

Q. Was any feedback given to you? What feedback did you receive from the panel at the end of session?
A. I had asked for the feedback myself. By the end of the interview, they made me feel as if I have been rejected on the face. So, I asked them how do you think I can improve myself to get into IMI apart from the good CAT score? So, a good feedback was given about my weaknesses and strengths.

Q. Did work experience help in getting the choice of your school and also in dealing with the curriculum?
A. Yes, it certainly helps you understand the course design from the industry perspective. You can relate more to the course once you understand the business application.

Q. Getting into and sailing through a B-school is easier for a Science Graduate than for someone from Humanities background. Your comments please.
A. It is equally difficult for all. However, engineers are used to handle stress better than the others because they have already faced stiff competition in their engineering entrance exam and then the engineering itself is quite demanding.

Q. What points did you consider in deciding the right time to go for the program and to start preparing?
A. 1. My stage in career.
    2. My future aspirations
    3. My family
    4. Funding

Q. Will an MBA degree add on to your existing career plan or did you decide to switch/start a career in management?
A. It will help me to grow as an integrated professional with logical and more structured approach towards issue resolutions.

Q. Why did you decide to do MBA from this school?
A. 1. By far, the best faculty in India-even better than IIM's. More than 50% professors have served for more than half their careers abroad in industry and premium B schools.
    2. Constantly climbing up the ladder in the past 3 years.
    3. Location- Delhi.
    4. Best managed and most transparent selection procedure.

Q. Were you able to get the school of your choice or did you compromise and opted for the best option that was open/available for you?
A. I had aimed to get into IIMA or IIML or IMI. So, it was in the list of schools that I had aspired to get into.
