The Day After... Part-II Job Profile: Next thing is the job profile. Generally, the job profile is same and the background does not matter. But Indians, being good in numbers generally, tend to perform better in research, trading and Investment banking, the functions, which require a stronger quantitative and analytical focus. The "sales or retail banking" function requires a greater interaction and coordination with the clients. The Sales function typically requires someone who can "speak the language" and "understands the subtle nuances of American culture". The U.S. MBAs, most of who actually grew up in U.S., definitely have an edge here. As a result, the job profile is designated to suit the strengths of the candidate where he performs best. Candidates also gravitate towards their stronger coordinates. Within a specific function, there is no differentiation between the US and Indian MBAs. Plum Assignments: Same goes for the "plum assignments". Once you have proven yourself in the initial assignments, you get as good assignments as the best guys there. And in a career progress, typically the country of graduation is irelevant per se. The career progress depends on a number of parameters wherein skills are the key variables. And you learn the new skills continuously. Don't we all know that the person delivering the results can reach the top in US? And this fact is clear with the way senior managers handle their team and juniors. There is no preferential treatment, whatsoever, vis-à-vis US MBAs, a fact confirmed by both Nikunj and George.
