Marketing
Highlights
Overview The highlight of Marketing arena was the improved package by all the top marketing companies. This increase was due to increased competition from the I-banks and to ward off the threat of dotcoms, which had left these firms in short of people at middle and lower management levels. As a result, the number of offers was higher than the usual by these heavyweights. HLL and P&G dominated marketing, which are traditional Day 1 companies at any campus. Package improved from traditional Rs 3 Lakhs per annum to Rs. 5+ Lakhs for HLL and P&G. Others also increased the package like Heinz, Asian Paints. Around 20-30% of the batch opted for marketing career on an average across campuses. Apart from IIMs, where students had high percentage into Consultancy, other B-schools had marketing percentage on higher side, on 25%, since percentage of students going into Consultancy was less, and marketing companies recruit heavily from these campuses. At IIMs, marketing companies, lined onward Day 2, were unable to recruit any student, as placements were over by then. At IIMs, traditional giants like HLL and P&G won coveted Day 1 morning slot as usual. And they recruited a couple of students more than they usually do. But earlier, they used to get a look at students ranked 20-30 at IIMs. This year, they got to take a shot at students ranked 50+. And this trend will continue. Highlight, along with salary hikes, was the arrival of Swatch, Swiss watchmaker, at IIMA with all time high marketing package of Rs. 8.5 Lakhs. Other favourites were SKB, Heinz, Cadbury's. Bounty hunters At SP Jain, Colgate led with 4 offers along with HLL, P&G, Dabur, Britannia, Godrej Soaps, Marico with on average two offers each. International Best Foods was there. At MDI, Dabur led with 3 offers accepted along with Asian Paints (3 accepted offers). IMT, a traditional marketing bastion, saw Whirlpool, Dabur, UB group, Pidilite, Godrej & Boyce, Williamson Manor group, J.L Morrison, etc., in action. At IIML, HLL (7 offers accepted), Asian Paints (6 offers accepted), BPL (5 offers accepted), P&G (4 offers accepted) led the marketing companies. At IIMC and IIMA, HLL and P&G led the field along with Heinz. At IIMA, HLL and Heinz made 5 offers each, whereas Swatch and SKB made one offer each. At IIMB, Heinz led with 5 offers, BPL (4 offers) along with Pepsi, Coke and Nestle (2 offers each).
