The end of an Epic... (1100 Hrs IST 04/03/2000, IIMA Campus)

It is Day 1 at IIMA placement 2000, and the corporate moghuls who are starting their recruitment process are... hold it...

... the 'Job Shop' specially erected for placement process in D-16 lawns at IIMA campus is in the process of being dismantled right in front of our eyes as the placements are nearly over at IIMA.

It has just gone the way CoolAvenues anticipated when we arrived on IIMA capmus.

For the first time in the history of IIMA (or rather any MBA institute in South Asia), more than 100 students have got foreign placements and these are no ordinary jobs but with the very best names wordwide (the same names which Harvard dons write their memoirs about). Goldman Sachs, MSDW, McKenaa, S&P, WDR are some of the names which made appearance for the first time. The situation can only be expected to get better with times (if feedback by visiting recruiters to CoolAvenues team is anyything to go by).

It is the second (physical) day of Day I, and out of a batch of 184, 155 students have opted out of placements; and out of 29 students, 25 have one job in hand and remaining 5 students are going to be placed in an hour or so with 59 companies yet to land at the campus.

Total number of offers made so far are in excess of 230. The highest salary in India is Rs. 25 lakhs (by Indocean Chase) and foreign placement highest salary is USD 150,000 (base salary + bonus and other incentives). But here, we have also come across an IIMA grad who has been offered a salary much higher than USD 150,000 though he has still not committed to joining.

Some of the figures for Day 1 recruitment are... (this is a partial list, expect the final list by tonight or early tomorrow):

Yantra - 8
Execter - 4
ICICI - 31
Citi - 20
P&G - 7
HLL - 5
S&P - 2 (Day 0)
HSBC - 4
J&J - 1
Chrysalis - 1
JMMS - 6
AC - 8

Have you ever come across a single company picking 1/6th of the batch? Yes, it is happening here at IIMA (ICICI has continued its "line lagao" program across the IIMs). Expect a detailed analysis by CoolAvenues very soon... (on this page itself). Also an update on NR Cafe.

2000 hrs IST and the result is.....

Well, the offers are pouring in but due to sensitivity of the data, CoolAvenues has decided to release the final data on the web site after the process is over. So watch this space and stay tuned or shall we say "stay logged in."

1830 hrs IST
Day I, Act IV, Scene I

As the sun is setting in Ahmedabad on March 03rd 2000, the WIMWI's Day 1 of the Placement 2000 is going from strength to strength. More famous names have started their recruitment process including Exeter, Cadbury's, Colgate Palmolive, Heinz, Gillette, RSG Technology, MindTree, WebTek, INautix, TSMG. We believe that the process will continue late tonight and offers will keep on coming.

1530 Hrs IST
Day I, Act III, Scene I

The companies that have started their selection process include ANZ, SCB, ABN Amro, Yantra, Ranbaxy, Coke, Pepsi, AP, E&Y and ITC. More and more companies are now having walk-in interviews as they are very much impressed by the quality of IIMA grads.

Update at 1230 Hrs IST
Day I, Act II, Scene I

It is a warm and sunny day at Ahmedabad and the placement process is no different. The other major corporate which have started their selection process are: PWC, Bank Boston, J&J, SKB, HSBC, and the results are expected any time. Watch this space for more news.

Update at 1100 Hrs
Day I, Act I, Scene I

At 8.30 am, the big names of Indian corporate world have arrived at campus for the recruitment of batch Y2K, and the list includes: HLL, P&G, Arthur Andersen, Andersen Consulting, KPMG, ICICI, Citi Bank, DSP Merril Lynch, CLS. The interview process as of now is going on. We will keep you updated as the NEWS will come in.

The desi brigade in action... (Update at 2000 Hours IST)

When we looked for something remotely associated with India on the IIMA placement notice-board, the only thing we came across was names of IIMA grads. Rest everything was international. The list of companies read like... Goldman, Morgan, BCG, MMG ... (we don't have to say it again and again, you already know it). But the scenario will change a bit tomorrow, things will be familiar, so will be the names... the veteran of IIMs placement will be in sight tomorrow... with KPMG, HLL, SKB (already on the campus), P&G, ICICI, Arthur Andersen, Andersen Consulting, Citibank, ABN Amro, JMMS (already interviewing people but results will be out tomorrow). Now, that's a familiar sight. Are'nt these the names we have been used to at campus for years?

The old guard is expected to come with bags and arms wide open. ICICI will be looking at 20+ people (going by what they have done at other IIMs). Also expect improved lists from HLL, P&G, Andersen, and others.

And it's not only the number of offers which these guys are bringing along. The stakes have been upped substantially by ICICI which has announced a Rs. 1.00 lakh joining bonus for the recruits, and HLL and P&G have hiked their salary substantially to ward off the threat from overseas. But...

And now for IIMA batches 1997 and earlier, update on Rambhai...

Remember Rambhai outside IIMA front, where one used to go to take a breather! AMC decided to widen the Vastrapur road infront of IIMA in early 1998 and in the process removed the makeshift stalls of Rambhai et al. But don't worry. They were down, but not out. They bounced back from the setback and are currently operating from outside IIMA gates only. Their stalls are now spread over a few metres across the barbed wire. And they continue to operate the supply chain of chai, bun-samosas, cold drinks and cigarettes to PGPs, tempting them to take a refreshing visit to Rambhai, which acts as a breath of fresh air. One wonders when the exact valuation of Rambhai's contribution to GPA of PGPs will be done!

And the saga continues... (IIMA campus 1630 hrs)

i2 has proved its words by its actions, a whopping 17 offers replete with dollars and ESOPs [$ 62,000 + 500 shares for the greenland (read USA) and Rs. 3.5 lakhs + 250 shares for the motherland (read India)]. Vinod Mathur from i2 told CoolAvenues that they wanted to recruit more people but could'nt as these guys had already opted out of the placement process. It seems nobody can get enough of IIMA grads!

Goldman made 4 offers in its maiden appearance at IIMA. The posting are based in HongKong (2 in Investment banking + 2 in Equities group). The number of offers as well as the choice of locations being offered will definitely improve next year, feels Aditya PGP2, who has been placed with New York office of MMG. Consulting firm ATK has made 6 Offeres.

The top salary on the capmus being offered is by MMG (USD 110 K + 1500 ESOPs). Some of the offers from Lehman, MSDW and Goldman may top the MMG salary.

Just now, leading VC firm Chrysalis, is in the process of interviewing people. The company has already recruited two IIMB grads and the results about IIMA will be out by tomorrow.

More of the same... are we dreaming? (IIMA campus 1430 hrs, March 2, 2000)

There's something unusual about senior executives from some of the best consulting firms and investment banks in the world hob-nobbing with file-toting twenty-somethings all day.

There's something unusual about a campus where students wear suits that would put Savile Row to shame.

There's something unusual about a campus where students rush around hollering orders into walkie-talkies, and where the odd by-stander gets to hear snatches like "Catering to PR 3", or "I want that man reporting to DBG NOW".

But then, this is not your usual campus, these are not your usual twenty-somethings, and this is not your usual day.

It's straight out of Ludlum. It's out of Asimov. It's out of this world.

It's called Day 0. And it's IIMA's way of sending out yet another batch of CEOs-to-be into the arms of an eagerly expectant world. Of course, Day 0 is only a logical day, which means it consists of two physical days. Both of which are actually Day 0, but... arrgh... forget it.

We decide to hang around at the scene of the action, and learn pretty soon what they meant when they talked of newspeople being in the "line of fire".

It happens every year, but this time round, the atmosphere seems to be especially charged at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. We soon figure out why. The who's who is here. For the word has spread. IIMA has arrived. Companies from across the planet have descended on Ahmedabad (which probably explains why we could not get a single room in ANY hotel here).

All right folks, gear up. It's time for the namesdropping. Let them speak for themselves, we say.

Goldman Sachs
Lehman Brothers
J P Morgan
Morgan Stanley Dean Witter
Deutsche Bank
Credit Suisse First Boston
McKinsey
Boston Consulting Group
Mitchell Madison Group
A T Kearney
i2 Technologies
Deloitte Consulting
Chrysallis
Indocean Chase

Phew!!! Seven of the world's biggest investment banks! Five of the biggest consulting firms (with more scheduled for Day 1)! Hotshot venture capitalists! In one campus. With one aim - to get as many as possible, to make the most "offers", to ensure the most "acceptances", and eventually, to reserve the best restaurants for the feast with the newly acquired.

And it's been an amazing day so far. Not only is the list of recruiting firms mind-boggling, the sheer number of offers that have been made is unprecedented in this country. Look at it whichever way you want to - the pick per company, the offers per student, the total number of offers, or, well... we'll save you the number-crunching. Watch this space and we'll have the final stats for you the moment they are ready.

So what is it, we wonder? What is it about IIMA that has CEOs going all wistful, that causes recruiters' eyes to light up?

It takes a lot to be the best management school around. It takes even more to be acknowledged as the best. Behind the glamour of the lists, behind the stratospheric salaries (in dollars, in sterling, in rupees...) that vary with the exchange rates, behind it all lies EFFORT. And naturally, management. At IIMA, the guys in control are the placecommies. Members of the Placement Committee. You'll recognise them by the black spots under their eyes - if you're placecom, you couldn't possibly have slept in the last two weeks.

And the results speak. One of the world's biggest investment banks, Goldman Sachs is at IIMA for the first time. This is the only campus in this country that they have visited for recruitments.

Which explains the dreamy expressions on the faces of students here, when "GS" is uttered in their presence. Or the "junta" outside the GS interview areas. Signs of a relationship that's just begun. And one that shall only grow stronger, as it did in the case of all the others.

Time for us to get back to the action. Hang in there, and we'll be back with the news, as it happens.

It's a new day ... or is it? (IIMA campus, March 2, 2000, 1015 hrs)

The Day 0 at IIMA is still continuing. The recruitment process contiuned today with the students from IIMA interviewng with the best in the world.

We don't have enough words to describe the wave (or is it tornado/ hurricane or whatever...) at IIMA campus. On top of bonanza of offers from MC, BCG, MMG, JPM, Lehman, DB... the list goes on... the followings were added durng late hours yesterday (after 11 pm).

Indocean Chase made 2 offers with never before salary of Rs 25 lakhs on Indian soil. Deloitte Consulting made 9 offers (7 for US + 2 Singapore postings with hefty dollar salaries and signing bonuses to boot). MSDW has made 2 offers. JMMS has also made offers but these will be disclosed on Day 1 (i.e. March 3). BCG, MC , MMG, DB have completed their recruitment process. The rest of the companies from Day 0 still haven't had their fill.

We will keep providing you the latest from vastrapur as it happens...

May the best man wins.
