Placements 2001

The pre-placement process has commenced at IIMC. The dreams of 214 of the brightest and the best will materialize over the next few days. As managers-in-waiting for two action-packed years, they now have the chance to display their ability and competency in front of critical yet expectant corporate recruiters.

The action so far

The number of pre-placement offers (PPO's) has shot up from 32 in 2000 to 54 this year. They include offers of 170,000 U.S. dollars from Deutsche Bank, 125,000 U.S. dollars from Barclays Capital, and 110,000 U.S. dollars from Lehman Brothers. And all this before placements have even started. This just goes to show the quality of the students here! This year, the placement process at IIMC has been modified a little. The number of companies coming in per day has been limited to 10-15. This has been done for the benefit of the students who would now get more time to evaluate the offers. Going by the information till pre-placement, there will be more MNC's this year offering great overseas postings in Europe, USA and in the Asia Pacific region.

The list of companies includes, Deutsche Bank, Lehman Brothers, JP Morgan Chase, HSBC, Bank of America, Citibank, P&G, Unilever Group, Glaxo SmithKline, to name a few. Consulting firms like McKinsey, the Boston Consulting Group, AT Kearney, Accenture, Arthur Anderson, Cap Gemini, Ernst & Young, Hewitt Associates, will also be there. Cognizant Technology Solutions, i2, iNautix, TechSpan, Exeter will be among the several IT companies coming down to campus. There will be new faces in the forms of Capital One, Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein (DrKW), and Svenka Handelsbanken and others of this class.

Placements 2001 @ IIMC: The Inside Story

It's that time of the year again.

IIM Calcutta opens its doors to recruiters all over the world, showcasing its intellectual capacity. Placements 2001 starts 27th February, and with it, the process of establishing and defining the lives of 214 odd students in the class of 2001. Though this may seem exaggerated to a certain extent, but the facts remain, the students are raring to take on the best.

But, what actually goes on in campus as and when D-Day approaches?

The companies have received the resumes, but it would have flattered them to see the kind of rushes that take place in CV submission. Frantic last minute updating to include the latest case winning results, to memorizing of theories of derivative pricing, all form an integral part of this final phase.

As Neil Barve, the placement representative says, "It's an honor to be able to welcome the kind of companies one gets to see during placement week. But the fact is, each year it just keeps getting better." This time around, IIM Calcutta students will play host to a number of Indian and overseas recruiters such as, Deutsche Bank, Lehman Brothers, JP Morgan Chase, HSBC, Bank of America, Citibank, P&G, Unilever Group, Glaxo SmithKline, to name a few. Consulting firms like McKinsey, the Boston Consulting Group, AT Kearney, Accenture, Arthur Anderson, Cap Gemini, Ernst & Young, Hewitt Associates, will also be there. i2, iNautix, Cognizant Technology Solutions, TechSpan, Exeter will be among the several IT companies coming down to campus. There will be new faces in the forms of Capital One, Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein (DrKW), and Svenka Handelsbanken, and others of this class.

One from the outside world sees a week of dollar salaries, huge sign on offers, a "stage" of bright lights, but the insiders know the kind of effort it requires to showcase an event of such magnitude. The junior batch is organized into various teams of Company Volunteers, Infrastructural support, trackers et al, to facilitate a seemless flow of information.

All are part and parcel to the smoothening of this highly awaited event. The facts stand, placements form an integral part of a student's life and at IIM Calcutta, this final step forms the end of 2 years of healthy but intense competition and marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in their lives!
